TOEFL Reading passages are dense on purpose — the test isn't checking whether you understood every sentence, it's checking whether you can locate the specific piece of information a question is actually asking about, quickly, in a long passage.
The biggest time-waster is reading the whole passage closely before looking at the questions. Most strong readers read for structure first, then hunt for details only when a question demands them.
Before answering questions, skim just the first and last sentence of each paragraph. That's usually enough to build a map of the passage — which paragraph explains what — so you know exactly where to look when a detail question comes up.
When a question asks what the author "implies," the correct answer is almost always a small, cautious step from the text — not a dramatic leap. If an option feels exciting or surprising, it's usually the wrong one.
These questions test whether you can use the surrounding sentence to figure out the meaning, not whether you already know the word. Cover the word itself and read the sentence around it — the answer is almost always deducible from context alone.
