The Quicksand That Won't Swallow You
¶1 Quicksand has a fearsome reputation that its real behavior does not fully support. In movies, a character in quicksand sinks lower and lower. Only a hand is left above the surface. This image convinces many people that quicksand can swallow someone whole. Water closes completely over a dropped stone, and people assume sand does too. Real quicksand forms only in a few wet places, such as riverbanks and beaches. There, sand and water happen to mix in a certain way.
¶2 Ordinary dry sand supports weight because its grains press tightly against one another. The friction between them locks the pile into something almost solid. Quicksand forms when water fills every gap between the grains and pushes upward, often from a spring or tide. The water pushes the grains apart until they stop pressing against each other. Once that contact is lost, the mixture starts behaving like a thick liquid. Scientists call this change liquefaction. A footstep alone can cause it.
¶3 This mechanism explains why people get stuck in quicksand. But it does not explain the complete sinking that movies show. [A] Quicksand is denser than a human body, much like thick mud is denser than wood. [B] Because liquefied sand pushes back harder than plain water does, a person's body stops sinking once its weight is balanced by that push, usually around the waist. [C] It works much like how a swimmer floats more easily in the Dead Sea than in a pool. [D] In 2005, a team of physicists confirmed the pattern by shaking sand and water in a lab. Their measurements matched reports from people who had been stuck.
¶4 The real risk is different from what movies suggest. Struggling makes matters worse. Fast movements loosen the sand, but only briefly. Once a limb stops moving, the sand settles again and grips it like wet concrete. People who lean back, spread their weight, and move slowly can usually work a leg free. It takes only a few minutes. The greater danger comes from where quicksand tends to form. Rising water nearby can turn a stuck leg into an emergency. Quicksand does not swallow anyone whole. It simply does not let go easily.
