SituationSchool Days

An interviewer asks you four questions about school. They start with you and get a little wider each time. Use the beginner formula for every answer: Answer, Reason, Example, Wrap-up.

Question 1Your Favorite Subject

What was your favorite subject in school? Why?

Start withMy favorite subject was…

Show Answer

My favorite subject was art. In art class, I could make things with my hands. We drew pictures, made clay cups, and painted. Other classes, like math, were hard for me. But art was fun and relaxing. Also, my art teacher was very kind. She always said nice things about my work. That made me feel confident. So, art was my favorite subject.

Why it works: The first sentence answers in the past tense, because the question asks about your school days. "In art class, I could…" gives the reason, and pictures, clay cups, and painting are quick examples. Comparing it with math makes the choice clearer, and "So" brings it back.

Question 2A Teacher You Remember

Tell me about a teacher you remember. Why do you remember this teacher?

Start withI remember…

Show Answer

I remember my art teacher in middle school, Ms. Park. She was kind and always smiled. One day, I was sad because my drawing was not good. She sat next to me and showed me how to use colors. Then she put my picture on the classroom wall. I was so proud. Because of her, I still love drawing today. She showed me that a good teacher can change a student's life.

Why it works: Start with who the teacher was and one word about them (kind). Then tell one moment step by step: the problem, what she did, and how you felt. The last two sentences say why you still remember her, which is what the question asks.

Question 3Online or Classroom

Do you prefer studying online or in a classroom? Why?

Start withI prefer studying…

Show Answer

I prefer studying in a classroom. First, I can focus better. At home, I often look at my phone or get sleepy. Second, I can ask the teacher questions right away. For example, last year I took an online English class, and I always had questions but no one to ask. Of course, online classes are good because you can study anywhere. But for me, a classroom works better.

Why it works: Pick one side in the first sentence, then two reasons with First and Second. The online English class is a real example from your own life. One good thing about the other side, then "But for me" brings it back to your choice.

Question 4Your Opinion

Do you think homework is helpful for students? Why or why not?

Start withYes, I think…

Show Answer

Yes, I think homework is helpful, but only a little each day. Homework helps students remember what they learned in class. It also teaches them to plan their time. For example, when I was in middle school, I did ten math problems every night, and my math grade went up. But too much homework is not good, because students need time to rest. So a small amount of homework is the best.

Why it works: Say yes, then add a limit right away ("only a little each day"). Two reasons, one example with a result (the math grade went up), and one line about the other side. The ending repeats the opinion with the limit.
