SituationFree Time

An interviewer asks you four questions about free time. They start with you and get a little wider each time. Use the beginner formula for every answer: Answer, Reason, Example, Wrap-up.

Question 1Your Free Time

What do you usually do in your free time?

Start withIn my free time, I usually…

Show Answer

In my free time, I usually draw. I started drawing two years ago, when I was bored at home. Now I draw almost every night before bed. I like to draw people and animals. Drawing is relaxing because I don't have to think about school or work. Sometimes I also watch movies with my family on weekends. But drawing is my favorite way to spend free time.

Why it works: The answer names one activity first, then adds when it started and how often. "Because" explains why it is relaxing. Mentioning a second activity is fine, as long as the last sentence comes back to the main one.

Question 2A Fun Day

Tell me about a fun day you had recently. What did you do?

Start withLast Saturday was…

Show Answer

Last Saturday was a really fun day. My friends and I went to a big park near the river. First, we rented bikes and rode for an hour. Then we had a picnic with sandwiches and fruit. In the evening, we watched the sunset by the river. We took a lot of pictures. I was tired when I got home, but I was very happy. It was the best day of the month.

Why it works: Past tense all the way, with order words: First, Then, In the evening. Small details (bikes, sandwiches, the sunset) make the story easy to picture. The ending says how you felt.

Question 3Alone or With Friends

Do you like to spend your free time alone or with friends? Why?

Start withI like to spend my free time…

Show Answer

I like to spend my free time with friends. When I am with friends, I laugh a lot, and my stress goes away. We can also try new things together, like a new restaurant or a new game. For example, last month my friend took me to a climbing gym. I was scared at first, but it was so fun. Of course, I need time alone too. But most of the time, friends make my free time better.

Why it works: Choose one side in the first sentence, then give two reasons and one short story as the example. "Of course, I need time alone too" shows you thought about both sides before the wrap-up.

Question 4Your Opinion

Do you think students today have enough free time? Why or why not?

Start withNo, I don't think…

Show Answer

No, I don't think students today have enough free time. Most students go to school all day. After school, many of them go to academies until late at night. For example, my cousin is in high school, and she gets home at ten o'clock every night. She has no time to rest or play. I think students need free time to relax and stay healthy. So schools should give less homework.

Why it works: Start with a clear no. The reason is something everyone knows (school all day, academies at night), and the cousin is the example. The ending suggests a small fix, which is an easy way to finish an opinion.
