SituationWeather and Seasons

An interviewer asks you four questions about weather and seasons. They start with you and get a little wider each time. Use the beginner formula for every answer: Answer, Reason, Example, Wrap-up.

Question 1Your Favorite Season

What is your favorite season? Why?

Start withMy favorite season is…

Show Answer

My favorite season is fall. First, the weather is perfect. It is not too hot and not too cold. Second, the trees are beautiful. The leaves turn red and yellow. I like to walk in the park in the fall and take pictures. Also, fall has a lot of delicious food, like apples and sweet potatoes. For these reasons, fall is the best season for me.

Why it works: Answer in the first sentence, then give three reasons with First, Second, and Also, each with a small detail (not too hot, red and yellow leaves, apples). "For these reasons" is an easy wrap-up for any why question.

Question 2When Weather Changed Plans

Tell me about a time the weather changed your plans.

Start withLast summer, a big storm…

Show Answer

Last summer, a big storm changed my plans. My friends and I wanted to go to the beach on Saturday. We packed our bags and bought snacks. But in the morning, it rained very hard, and there was strong wind. So we stayed at my house instead. We watched movies, ordered fried chicken, and played board games. It was not the day we planned, but it was still really fun.

Why it works: Say when and what happened in one sentence. Then the plan, the problem (heavy rain, strong wind), and what you did instead. The ending adds a small twist: it was still fun.

Question 3Hot or Cold

Do you prefer hot weather or cold weather? Why?

Start withI prefer…

Show Answer

I prefer cold weather. First, I can always wear more clothes when it is cold. But when it is hot, I can't do anything about it. Second, I sleep better on cold nights. For example, last August it was so hot that I woke up three times every night. In winter, I sleep under a warm blanket and feel cozy. Of course, too much snow is a problem. But I still like cold days more.

Why it works: Pick one side, then two reasons with First and Second. The hot August nights are a real example that makes the reason easy to believe. One problem with your choice (too much snow) makes the answer sound honest.

Question 4Your Opinion

Do you think the weather is changing in your country? Why do you think so?

Start withYes, I think…

Show Answer

Yes, I think the weather in Korea is changing. Summers are getting longer and hotter. When I was a child, it was hot only in July and August. Now it is hot from June to September. Also, we get more heavy rain in summer. For example, last year my street was flooded after one night of rain. I think everyone should save energy to help the planet. Small actions can make a difference.

Why it works: A clear yes first. Compare then and now (only July and August, now June to September) so the change is easy to see. One personal example, then a simple idea about what people can do.
