The standard account of nineteenth century migration describes desperate people leaving hopeless places, and it survives partly because it is emotionally 1. The archives complicate it considerably. Passenger lists, remittance records, and parish registers show a movement that was organized, selective, and frequently temporary. Selection is the first surprise. Emigrants were on average younger, more literate, and slightly better off than the neighbors they left behind, for the simple reason that leaving cost 2. The very poorest stayed, which is the opposite of what the desperation story predicts. The second surprise is how many returned. In some flows, a third or more of those who crossed came back within a decade, having 3 what they went for. Return was not failure and was often the plan from the beginning, which is why so many houses in emigrant regions were built with money earned abroad. None of this makes the movement comfortable or voluntary in any full sense. Households that sent a son abroad were usually responding to a real threat, and the choice was 4 even when it was a choice.
