Part B: Write an Email
Read the information and write an email in response. You have 7 minutes.
Email Writing Task
To: Ms. Carter
Subject: Thank You for the Recommendation Letter
Last month, your former English teacher, Ms. Carter, wrote a recommendation letter for you when you applied to a summer science program. Yesterday, you found out that you were accepted. The program starts in July, and you want to thank her before you leave.
Write an email to Ms. Carter.
- Thank her for writing the letter.
- Tell her the good news about the program.
- Invite her to meet before the program starts.
Perfect Score Answer30/30
SubjectThank You for the Recommendation Letter
Dear Ms. Carter,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to thank you again for the recommendation letter you wrote for me last month. I know you were very busy with end-of-year grading, so it meant a lot that you made time to help me.
I have some great news. Yesterday I received an email from the summer science program, and I was accepted! The program starts on July 5, and I will spend four weeks doing experiments in a real university lab. I am sure your letter helped them choose me.
Before I leave, I would love to meet you and tell you more about it. Would you be free for coffee at the café near school sometime next week? Any afternoon works for me.
Thank you again for your support.
Best regards,

Score30 / 30
Logic
Each paragraph handles one point, in the same order as the task. The thanks is personal (the teacher was busy with grading), the good news has real details (start date, four weeks, a university lab), and the invitation gives a place and a time range so Ms. Carter can reply easily. The tone is polite but warm, which fits an email to a teacher you know well.

High Score Answer25/30
SubjectThank You
Dear Ms. Carter,
Thank you for writing the recommendation letter for me. It was very kind of you.
I got accepted to the summer science program! I am very happy and excited.
Can we meet before July? I want to talk to you.
Thank you again.
Best,
[Your Name]
Score25 / 30
Logic
All three points are there and the email is polite, so the task is complete. It scores lower because there are almost no details: we do not learn when the program starts or what the writer will do there. The invitation has no time or place, and "I want to talk to you" sounds a little abrupt for a teacher.
Golden Vocabulary

Part C: Academic Discussion
Write a response to the academic discussion. You have 10 minutes.
Academic Discussion Topic
Your professor is teaching a class in Sociology. During the lecture, the professor asks the following question.
Professor
“Today, we are talking about teenagers and work. In some countries, many high school students have part-time jobs after school or on weekends. In other countries, most teenagers do not work until they finish school. Do you think high school students should have part-time jobs? Why or why not?”
Emma
Yes, I think they should. A part-time job teaches responsibility, like arriving on time and handling money. My job at a grocery store taught me how to talk to customers politely. You can't learn these skills in a classroom.
Kevin
I don't think it's a good idea. High school students already have a lot of homework and tests. If they work many hours, they will be tired, and their grades may go down. School should come first.
Perfect Score Answer30/30
I agree with Emma that high school students should have part-time jobs, as long as they only work a few hours a week. A job teaches lessons that school cannot. For example, my cousin worked at a bakery every Saturday when he was sixteen. He learned to save money, and after six months he bought his own laptop without asking our parents for help. He also became much more confident talking to adults. Kevin is right that schoolwork is important, but one short shift on the weekend does not take time away from studying. In fact, my cousin said the job made him plan his week better. So I believe a small part-time job helps teenagers grow up.
Score30 / 30
Logic
The first sentence gives a clear opinion and adds a sensible limit (only a few hours a week). The cousin example is specific: a bakery, Saturdays, six months, a laptop. That makes the reason believable. The response then answers Kevin directly, agreeing with part of his point before explaining why it does not change the conclusion. Simple words, but a complete argument.

High Score Answer25/30
I agree with Emma. I think high school students should have part-time jobs. When students work, they learn responsibility and how to use money. Also, they can talk to many people at work, so their social skills get better. Kevin says students will be tired, but I think they can study and work together if they try hard. So part-time jobs are good for students.
Score25 / 30
Logic
The opinion is clear and both classmates are mentioned, so the response stays on topic. It scores lower because the reasons mostly repeat Emma's post and there is no specific example. The answer to Kevin ("if they try hard") does not really explain how students can manage both.

Online classes are convenient, but I believe students learnslearn more in a classroom, because they can discuss aboutdiscuss ideas with theretheir classmates right away.
That was one essay. Your full test has two. Both get this.
