Morgan — You are having a conversation with Morgan, a researcher studying how technology affects people's daily lives. Morgan will ask you questions about your personal experience with technology.

Turn 1
“Hi! I'm researching how technology has changed people's lives. To start, how many hours a day would you say you use technology, like your phone or computer?”
Useful Expressions
hours a day · work and personal use · devices · unaware of usage
Show Model Response
Hi Morgan! That's a great topic. Honestly, I probably spend around eight to ten hours a day using technology if I count everything — my phone, my laptop, and other devices. Most of that time is for work, since I use a computer for almost all my tasks. But I also spend time on my phone for social media, messaging friends, and watching videos in the evening. I think most people today use technology for a very large portion of their day without even realizing it.
Turn 2
“That's quite a lot. Do you think technology has generally made your life better or more stressful?”
Useful Expressions
work from anywhere · instant communication · difficult to disconnect · set limits
Show Model Response
I would say it has made my life better overall, but it definitely brings some stress too. On the positive side, technology allows me to work from anywhere, communicate instantly with people across the world, and access information on almost any topic within seconds. That is incredibly convenient. But the downside is that I sometimes feel like I can never fully disconnect. Notifications and emails arrive at all hours, which can make it hard to relax. So I try to set some limits, like turning off notifications after a certain time in the evening.
Turn 3
“Interesting. Can you give me a specific example of how technology has changed the way you work or study?”
Useful Expressions
real-time collaboration · shared documents · video conferencing · remote teamwork
Show Model Response
Sure. One clear example is how I collaborate with others. In the past, team projects required everyone to be in the same room. Now, I can work on shared documents with colleagues in different cities at the same time. We can leave comments, make edits, and track changes all in real time. Video conferencing tools have also replaced many in-person meetings, which saves a lot of travel time. I think these tools have made collaboration much more efficient, though sometimes I do miss the energy of working together face-to-face.
Turn 4
“How do you feel about social media specifically? Do you think it has a positive or negative effect on people?”
Useful Expressions
double-edged sword · stay connected · mental health · intentional use
Show Model Response
Social media is a double-edged sword, I think. On one hand, it is an amazing tool for staying in touch with friends and family, discovering new ideas, and connecting with people who share your interests from all over the world. Small businesses and independent creators can use it to build an audience without a huge budget. On the other hand, I worry about the mental health effects, especially for younger people. Spending too much time comparing yourself to others online can lead to feelings of inadequacy. I think the key is using social media intentionally rather than mindlessly scrolling for hours.
Turn 5
“Are there any types of technology you think are especially important for the future?”
Useful Expressions
artificial intelligence · personalized learning · renewable energy · bridging cultures
Show Model Response
Absolutely. I think artificial intelligence is going to be one of the most transformative technologies of the coming decades. It is already changing how we work, learn, and receive medical care. For example, AI tools can help doctors detect diseases earlier and help teachers provide more personalized learning experiences. I also think renewable energy technology is critically important for addressing climate change. Beyond that, I believe advancements in communication technology will continue to bring people closer together and help bridge gaps between different cultures and communities.
Turn 6
“Finally, if you could give one piece of advice to someone who wants to use technology more effectively, what would you say?”
Useful Expressions
use with intention · digital habits · take screen breaks · technology as a tool
Show Model Response
My advice would be to use technology with intention and purpose. Technology is a tool, and like any tool, its value depends entirely on how you use it. I would encourage people to be deliberate about which apps and platforms they use, and to regularly ask whether those tools are genuinely helping them achieve their goals. It is also important to take regular breaks from screens, spend time in nature, and nurture face-to-face relationships. Technology should enhance your life, not replace the things that give it meaning. Being mindful about your digital habits can make a huge difference in your overall well-being.
