About the writing tests
The 2026 TOEFL writing section is structured around three core tasks, and the practice sets here cover all three. Build-a-sentence trains the discrete grammar moves graders look for — parallelism, modifier placement, subject-verb agreement under pressure. Academic discussion gives you a professor's prompt and two student replies, and asks you to add a third post that takes a clear position and supports it. Email simulates the kind of formal reply you'd send to a professor or campus office — polite, structured, on a single topic.
The angle I take with my own students is that the writing section isn't really about creativity — it's about hitting the rubric. So every test on this site is organized by the score band it targets. Score 80 sets focus on getting the rubric basics locked down: clear thesis, two supporting points, transitions that don't tangle. Score 90 tightens vocabulary and rhetorical control. Score 100 works on the small high-leverage moves graders weight — concession-rebuttal, precise hedging, and synthesis across the prompt's evidence.
Every prompt ships with two model answers (so you can see two valid ways to hit the same band), a grading note, and a band-by-band breakdown of why one answer would score higher than the other. No paywall.
