The question of whether artworks transcend their contexts or remain fundamentally determined by them is among the most generative in aesthetic theory. A strong contextualist position — that meaning is entirely a function of historical circumstance — cannot fully account for the fact that works produced in radically different times and places continue to generate powerful aesthetic responses across cultural boundaries. Yet an equally strong formalist claim — that the autonomous structure of a work yields meaning independently of its origins — struggles to explain why the same formal properties carry such different resonances in different historical moments. The most defensible position holds context and formal structure in productive tension: the conditions of a work's making shape but do not exhaust its meanings, and each successive encounter adds new layers of significance that its original context could not have anticipated. The endurance of great art may lie precisely in this capacity for contextual re-inscription.
