Professor
Should humanity focus on becoming a multi-planetary species, or should it dedicate its resources to repairing Earth’s environmental damage?
Classroom Opinions
Alex: Earth must come first because it is already livable.
Jamie: Mars provides insurance against extinction.
Sample Answer
I agree with Alex that humanity should focus its efforts on healing Earth rather than investing heavily in Mars colonization. Earth already has the necessary conditions for life, while Mars is extremely hostile and requires massive resources to support even small human settlements.
Climate change is an urgent problem causing extreme weather, food shortages, and rising sea levels. These issues affect people today, not in the distant future. Funding renewable energy, conservation programs, and sustainable infrastructure would provide immediate and measurable benefits.
Although Jamie’s argument about extinction risks is understandable, preparing for hypothetical future disasters should not overshadow current global emergencies. If humans fail to manage Earth responsibly, moving to another planet will only repeat the same mistakes.
Therefore, focusing on Earth is both the most practical and ethical decision at this stage of human development.
