Class Discussion

Professor:

Today, we are exploring an important debate in education. Assuming that financial resources are limited and must be allocated carefully, should a university degree be considered a basic human right funded entirely by the state?

Student A (Emma)

I believe a university degree should be funded by the state as a basic human right because education improves people’s lives and benefits society. When everyone has access to higher education without worrying about costs, more skilled individuals contribute to the economy and community development.

Student B (Liam)

I disagree with Emma. While education is important, fully funding university degrees by the state is not practical. This could lead to higher taxes and less money for other public services. Also, people might not value their education if it is free, which could reduce motivation and effort.

🏆 Perfect Score – The Sniper Approach (30/30)

While Liam argues that state funding for university degrees might lead to higher taxes and reduced motivation, he fails to consider the fundamental societal mechanism through which education drives long-term economic and social stability. Why should a university degree be a basic human right funded by the state? The swift rise of knowledge economies worldwide offers a clear answer. For example, Finland’s education system, renowned for being almost entirely state-funded, has consistently produced a highly skilled workforce, resulting in low unemployment rates and high innovation indices. This paradigm shift demonstrates that state-funded higher education facilitates autonomy and equal opportunity, preventing social stratification driven by financial barriers. The policy not only empowers individuals but generates broad socio-economic benefits, thus justifying its implementation as a basic right rather than a privilege.

🏆 High Score – The Standard Approach (25/30)

I think a university degree should be funded by the state because education helps people get better jobs and improve their lives. If a student from a poor family can go to university without paying, they can have the same chances as richer students. For example, if a student studies hard and graduates, they can find a good job and support their family. However, I also understand that free education may cost a lot of money for the government, so it is important to find a balance. But overall, I believe education should be available to everyone because it helps society grow.
