Tech – Level 1

Directions

Your professor is teaching a class on Tech. Write a post responding to the professor’s question. In your response, you should:

  • express and support your personal opinion
make a contribution to the discussion in your own words
  • An effective response will contain at least 100 words. You have ten minutes to write.

Class Discussion

Professor:

Today, we explore a fascinating topic in technology: the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). Assuming that new technologies always bring both positive and negative effects, we must carefully examine AI’s impact beyond just economic benefits. Apart from concerns about job loss and privacy, is the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence a net benefit or a fundamental threat to human society?

Emily

I believe AI is mostly a benefit because it helps solve many difficult problems. For example, AI can analyze large amounts of medical data quickly to find better treatments for diseases. This practical use of AI improves health and saves lives, showing clear benefits to society.

James

I see AI as a potential threat because it can lead to loss of jobs and increased surveillance. Moreover, if AI systems make important decisions without human control, mistakes or biases could harm people. We need to be cautious about how much control we give AI in society.

Sample Answers & Evaluation

🏆 Perfect Score – The Sniper Approach (30/30)

While James expresses concern about AI’s risks, he overlooks the fundamental mechanism by which AI can facilitate societal advancement: its capacity to enhance human autonomy rather than replace it. The core issue is not AI itself but how humans integrate it responsibly.

Consider the case of DeepMind’s AlphaFold, an AI system that revolutionized protein folding prediction, a decades-old biological problem. This breakthrough accelerates drug discovery and disease understanding, demonstrating AI’s transformative potential beyond simple automation.

James’ argument fails to account for how such specific advancements demonstrate a paradigm shift from AI as a threat to an indispensable tool that augments human capabilities. Hence, the rapid advancement of AI represents a net benefit by facilitating progress in critical scientific fields, ultimately enhancing human welfare and autonomy.

This example elucidates why fearing AI’s potential risks without appreciating its actual contributions leads to a skewed perception of technology’s impact on society.

Teacher’s Feedback

Score: 30/30

Logic: This student used a specific, real-world example (AlphaFold’s protein folding success) to address the opposing view directly and deeply. They explained why the fear of AI neglects the actual benefits AI brings to humanity’s autonomy and health. The argument is clear, precise, and supported by advanced vocabulary.

Golden Vocabulary: autonomy, paradigm shift, facilitate

💡 Pro Tip: Focus on one core argument and support it with a detailed real-world example to create a powerful essay.

🏆 High Score – The Standard Approach (25/30)

I believe the rapid advancement of AI is more of a benefit than a threat. AI helps people do things faster and solve problems that are difficult for humans alone.

For example, if scientists use AI to study diseases, they can find new medicines faster. Also, AI can make work easier by doing repetitive tasks, which saves time. However, I understand some fear AI because it might cause job loss or mistakes if not controlled well.

In general, I think AI is a tool that helps humans become better and should be used carefully to avoid problems. If we manage AI well, it will bring more good than harm to society.

Teacher’s Feedback

Score: 25/30

Logic: This student gave a clear opinion and logical reasons but used a general example rather than a specific case. The essay is well organized but lacks the depth and precise vocabulary seen in the 30-point answer.

Golden Vocabulary: repetitive, manage, control

💡 Pro Tip: Use specific real-world examples to strengthen your argument and add advanced vocabulary for more impact.
