Tech – Level 1

Directions

Your professor is teaching a class on Tech. Write a post responding to the professor’s question. In your response, you should:

  • express and support your personal opinion
make a contribution to the discussion in your own words
  • An effective response will contain at least 100 words. You have ten minutes to write.

Class Discussion

Professor:

Welcome to today’s class on technology and its impact. Today, we focus on the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. Apart from ethical concerns—such as job displacement and privacy issues—I want you to consider whether this fast growth is more of a net benefit or a fundamental threat to human society. What is your opinion?

Student A – Emily

I believe the rapid advancement of AI is a net benefit to human society. Its practical applications, such as improving healthcare through faster diagnosis and treatment suggestions, show clear benefits. For example, AI systems like IBM Watson help doctors analyze large amounts of patient data quickly, leading to better medical decisions and saving lives.

Student B – James

While I see the benefits, I worry about the fundamental threats. AI’s increasing autonomy may result in unintended consequences such as loss of jobs, privacy violations, and over-reliance on machines. We also must consider the risk of AI being used in harmful ways, like autonomous weapons or deepfake technology that spreads misinformation.

Sample Answers & Evaluation

🏆 Perfect Score – The Sniper Approach (30/30)

While James highlights potential risks like job loss and misinformation, he fails to address the fundamental mechanism through which AI can be controlled and regulated to mitigate these threats. I argue that the rapid advancement of AI is, overall, a net benefit to human society because it facilitates unprecedented productivity and innovation.

To understand why, consider the healthcare sector, where AI models such as IBM Watson have revolutionized diagnostics and treatment plans by analyzing vast medical data with statistical probability, leading to more personalized and effective care. This paradigm shift increases patient autonomy and outcomes significantly. The concerns about AI weaponization or misinformation, while serious, are challenges to be managed through policy and ethical frameworks, not reasons to halt progress. Hence, the rapid AI growth represents an evolution that can enhance human capabilities rather than threaten them fundamentally.

Teacher’s Feedback

Score: 30/30

Logic: This student pinpointed a key flaw in the opposing argument—lack of consideration for control mechanisms—and used a strong, real-world example (IBM Watson in healthcare). The depth of explanation shows critical thinking beyond a surface-level opinion.

Golden Vocabulary: statistical probability, autonomy, paradigm shift

💡 Pro Tip: Focus on one core argument deeply rather than spreading your reasons too thin. Use specific, real examples to support your point.

🏆 High Score – The Standard Approach (25/30)

I think the rapid advancement of AI is mostly good for society. One big reason is that it helps many industries work better and faster. For example, in healthcare, AI can help doctors by giving quick suggestions for treatments based on patient data. This can improve health outcomes for many people.

However, some problems like job losses and misuse of AI are important to think about. But these problems can be fixed if we create good rules and laws. Overall, AI is a useful tool that helps people and makes life easier, so it is more of a benefit than a threat.

Teacher’s Feedback

Score: 25/30

Logic: The essay has a clear opinion and good organization. It uses a general example about healthcare but does not provide specific real-world evidence. The argument is less deep and critical compared to the perfect score answer.

Golden Vocabulary: outcomes, misuse

💡 Pro Tip: Try to include specific real examples in your essays and explain your key point in more detail.
